What a beautiful and intimate theater. The grounds are even more so. We saw the fabulous rendition of My Fair Lady tonight. Such a fabulous showing. Close your eyes and you'd think you were listening to Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. Just perfect.
The d h t production of beauty and the beast was awesome. The newly renovated theater is also beautiful and functional as well. Still don't have enough bathrooms especially for the women.
Great new theater with comfortable seating close to Waikiki. Diamond Head Theater puts on great productions and has programs for community members interested in theater. I'd recommend you check out a show here. There is ample free parking in their lot and street parking is also available.
My daughter and I had an amazing evening watching the Beauty and the Beast musical! Great cast, choreography and production. We enjoyed every second of it!
The venue is nice and nostalgic for me, as a kapahulu native, but also former KCC student. Literally right across the street, is KCC (Kapiolani Community College) for anyone that doesn't know, one of the colleges on the island part of the UH system.
I've been passing by this building since middle school, catching the number 3 bus from kaimuki middle school, through K town, and then getting off by the parking lot of the theater (or previously anyways). Now the parking is across the street in the KCC parking lot.
I can't remember what the building looked like before, but this building had been renovated some years ago and is now newer to some extent from that.
The seats are alright. I find myself moving around and adjusting often, but that's probably just me (personally maybe 🤔) cause I tend to dress nicer than usual, and sometimes arrive uncomfortable lol in more fitted attire. Whether it be whatever, I don't think it's anything to do with the actual seats. There's enough room for people to pass you comfortably, when they're trying to find their seats 😂
The area is great enough that you can hear every actors lines, also because of the factor that the actors are also great. My favortie part is listening to the orchestra playing live, which plays in front of the stage, in an area just below the stage, out of view from the audience, but you can see them before or after the play (you presumably watch). Or during intermission.
I recommend planning a head of time in regards to arriving there after dinner maybe? I think that would be appropriate and a 'tradition' I tend to do when watching plays now. Just so my mind is focused on what I'm watching and not thinking of other things, specifically food (after one time of breaking this, and then thinking of food til after I was out... Although they do have snacks and drinks there, but I haven't had any. I also believe you can't eat inside anyways, so only during before or during intermission can you drink anything or eat anything. They also sell beer I thought I saw.
I've seen more than a few plays there now, my most recent being Beauty and the Beast. There was the play version of 'The Birdcage'. There was Charlie and the chocolate factory... Just iconic plays that you'd expect to see anywhere really.
It always feels nice and I do really enjoy watching something live as opposed to a movie I feel.
I'd recommend checking out any plays taking place here, as I've always had a good time because of the venue and atmosphere of the production. They're always professional and the plays are always done well.
I can't confirm where you could buy tickets though, as I've always done this online prior to any date, but through someone else I usually go with. I'm sure it's not difficult to obtain more info about this. You might also be able to buy tickets there maybe? But I wouldn't Chace it, and would look it up prior to going 🫶
The new theater is great! Very accessible, cashless concession stand (seriously card only), and strong air conditioner (bring a jacket). It's a great time for all. Also, the second Sunday show also offers ASL interpreters which is very nice.
First time here since the opening of the newly built Diamond Head Theatre to see the musical, Le Cage Aux Folles.
Saw the musical, Body Guard, from the movie with same title at the newly built Diamond Head Theater. Have attended several plays at the old venue when I lived here over 5 years ago. The quality of the productions back then was first rate. Great cast, acting and production details. Not so much now.
For me, the story never got off the ground. The intial scenes of dancing and singing were off. The lead actress playing Rachel (Whitney Houston) was either singing too low or her microphone was not turned up enough. I could barely hear her over the music and others singing. Honestly, both of us thought she was lip sincing, at least in the early scenes.
Unfortunately, the lead actor playing Frank, (Kevin Costner), the body guard, was, in my opinion, miscast. He was pretty awkward throughout.
The final few scenes were better and the final scene where Rachel sings I will Always Love You was the best performance of the show. Also, the actor who played Rachel's sister was a very good singer and actor.
